In this AU Zira is Mufasa's sister and she's playing the same role that Scar in canon: she wants to rule the Pridelands all by herself and get rid of Mufasa. She tried to kill him, but Mufasa survived and exiled her from the Pridelands.
Before all that Zira met Scar, a stray lion, she was together with him, they had a cub, Kovu. But Zira never loved Scar, she only wanted to have a cub of her own, a future heir. After Kovu's birth she left Scar and told him to never come back.
Scar was heartbroken, he was hesitating if he should leave, but then he met a lioness that truly loved him and left with her. Zira was so aggressive and she wouldn't let Scar meet Kovu anyway.
Mufasa and Sarabi had Simba, like in canon, Simba has grown up and was training to become a king. Kovu also has grown up, Zira was training him to take over the Pridelands, to fight and be cruel.
Kovu was always a soft kid, the older he gets the more he realizes he doesn't want to play this role, plus he met Simba and they liked each other (it's up to you to decide, as friends or as lovers).
Kovu was too scared to tell Simba the truth about his past, he just continued meeting Simba and hang out with him. One day Zira suddenly attacked, Simba was shocked and thought Kovu was responsible for that.
Unknown to anybody, Scar came to see the battle. Many things changed in all these years, he and that lioness went separate ways and Scar became a stray lion again. He was often remembering about Kovu, and he decided to find him. And finally it happened.
Scar was hurt to see Kovu in this battle, and after Kovu was knocked down he came to him, trying to comfort his son. They finally had a conversation away from anyone, in the peaceful place where Zira and her clan can't find Kovu.
Kovu told Scar he lost all the hope and doesn't know how to get out of this situation, Scar told Kovu he's lost too, but next morning they both decided to try once more to make things better. Now when they have each other
