Meet Christie.
Christie is a dairy farmer dealing with the tiresome issue of weeds infiltrating her grasslands.
The manual labor is too much of a strain, and she either can remove the weeds manually or she can use herbicides which not only affect her land and the surrounding environment, but also, would result in her cows living among chemicals, which can't be comfortable!
If only Christie had a way to take care of her pesky weed problem without having to settle for any of the contemporary drawbacks of weed removal, she could not only improve the life of her cows but also avoid the harmful effects of herbicides on her pastures.
This is where GALIRUMI comes in. GALIRUMI is a project funded by the European Commision and the European Agency for the Space Program whose main objective is to deliver robot weeding for herbicide-free weed control in dairy farming.
This robot will be assisted by Galileo - the European global navigation satellite system - in tackling the weed Rumex Obtusifolius.
There are many problems and difficulties for users and their surroundings that go hand in hand with weed removal, but this new technology, combined with advanced vision weed detection, would allow us to increase not only the profitability of dairy farming, but also the sustainability.
With the integration of the Galileo satellites, GALIRUMI plans to offer two solutions for farmers like Christie. The first, is a robot for electric weeding, the second, a less expensive robot that uses laser weeding technology.
Both can be offered as a service through a contractor or can be bought and operated by farmers themselves.
As robots take over many repetitive and time-consuming tasks such as weeding, modern farmers will have more free time on their hands. Very soon, Christie will be effortlessly and sustainably removing weeds, while maintaining profitability.
