Waste from electronic products, e-waste, is one of the fastest growing waste streams in the world with almost 54 million tonnes generated in 2019, rising to 74 million tonnes by 2030, with less than one fifth of this officially collected for recycling. These issues need addressing, not only to increase recycling but to prevent e-waste in the first place.
The C-SERVEES project has been created to tackle this challenge by developing electronic products that are designed to be produced, transported and consumed in new circular ways.
The project focuses on four products: washing machines, televisions, printers and sensors that monitor network connections. It has developed new business models for each of them that reflect the circular economy concept.
The goal is to: design products that last longer and contain a greater quantity of recycled materials, make it possible to lease the products rather than buy them, use 3D printed parts for repair or upgrade, improve the recyclability of the products, and take into account the social impacts of producing and consuming the products.
All this will be supported by an IT system that enables the tracking of products over their lifetime and gives easy access to information about them, such as the materials it contains.
These innovations and principles have been applied to the products and are being rigorously assessed to establish their applicability and impact.
The outcome of C-SERVEES will be four practical circular business models that have been implemented and tested, address all aspects of the lifecycle of the products and, crucially, will be able to be used by other manufacturers and for other products across the world.
