Renewable hydrogen is the system that will revolutionise the energy and industrial sectors over the next few years by providing a notable reduction of emissions that helps achieve the objective of slowing climate change.
A chemical process known as electrolysis is used to separate the hydrogen from the oxygen contained in water, with the energy used for doing so coming from renewable sources, meaning that no carbon dioxide is emitted into the atmosphere.
Iberdrola is a pioneer of this technology and is planning to install 800 megawatts of green hydrogen to supply electricity to the plants of Fertiberia in Puertollano, Ciudad Real, and Palos de la Frontera, Huelva.
2021 will see the Puertollano operation become Europe’s first green hydrogen industrial facility. It will consist of a solar photovoltaic plant, with lithium-ion batteries for storing the energy, and one of the largest systems for producing hydrogen using electrolysis. The construction of this innovative 100 % renewable energy power plant will create 700 jobs and prevent the emission of 39,000 tonnes of CO2 a year.
Furthermore, the initial development of this technique involves Iberdrola creating its own value chain for the implementation of factories for building the electrolysers required for producing the green hydrogen, thus generating thousands of jobs and boosting the business of local suppliers.
