When it comes to car safety, most people think of seat belts and airbags. But today’s vehicles rely more than ever on complex software systems, often powered by Artificial Intelligence. As cars become increasingly connected, automated and data-driven, it is essential ensuring that these systems work exactly when they’re needed most.
The European Commission’s Joint Research Centre, together with Member States, continue to advance safe, smart and sustainable transport, developing robust regulations and testing frameworks to make sure innovation goes hand in hand with safety, so everyone can arrive home safely.

The Joint Research Centre (JRC) is starting the construction of its new permanent site in Seville, Spain. It will be a symbol of sustainability and innovation, the first net-positive energy building of its kind, fully embodying the *New European Bauhaus* principles.
The groundbreaking ceremony of the building was celebrated on 30 June 2025 in Seville with President von der Leyen, Commissioner for Startups, Research and Innovation, Ekaterina Zaharieva, Commissioner for Environment, Water Resilience and a Competitive Circular Economy, Jessika Roswall, and Spanish authorities.
