The Sacred Island of Okinoshima is a fascinating UNESCO World Heritage Site in Japan. Covering a series of sacred Shinto shrines, the sacred island itself is about halfway between Japan and Korea and is entirely off-limits, populated only by a single Shinto monk who spends his time praying, meditating and guarding the island. Also included in this entry on the World Heritage List are several other Shinto shrines, including Okitsu-miya and Nakatsu-miya on the nearby island of Oshima, and Hetsu-miya on the mainland.
