This video is part of a larger set that encompasses the R-Type Final 2 Ship Showcase Playlist. These R-Type Final 3 videos are essentially practice for what I'm doing on R-Typer3 difficulty.
Ships in this series: Andromalius, Albatross
The Albatross debuted in R-Type Delta on the PlayStation in 1998, and is a great defensive ship. The red weapon fires a beam straight ahead which can be expanded or contracted with horizontal movement from the Force. The blue weapon fires lasers at angles or straight ahead while expanded or contracted, and the beams will lock onto enemies and kill them - like with most of the lasers, they're not very powerful unless you're also machine gunning the enemy. The yellow weapon has a pair of trails that come from the Force and is a short range weapon - definitely my least favorite of the three. The Tentacle Force will home in on enemies while detached and shooting, making huge damage if it's touching an enemy while you are. The missile is the Scatter Bomb and will make a small explosion when it lands on the ground. The Bits are Round Bits, and will fire while the red weapon is equipped. The Wave Cannon is an explosive AoE attack that is good for hitting enemies hiding behind walls.
This stage is a battleship that you have to fly over until you reach the front, after which your ship will sink under the surface of the water and fly backwards until you reach the boss. I had to use the Tentacle Force to do most of the work for me, because I had a hard time killing the ship's turrets with a normal Force. Even though it's nothing alike, this stage reminds me of stage 3 from R-Type Delta. The graphics here are beautiful, with you flying through a snowstorm at night.
The boss is a pair of red crystals that fire beams at angles, trying to home in on your ship, and will freeze the rocks dropping from above you. If the rocks freeze, they will explode after a few seconds into projectiles that you can't block with the Force, so you have to be wary of your positioning. After you break the two crystals, the main gun will open and fire at you, also freezing the projectiles that fall through the beam. I spent most of my time letting the Tentacle Force kill the crystals while I tried to stay safe.
