In May 1944 The 12th and 15th US Army Air Forces attacked the Axis Controlled Ilva steel mill. The 500 lbs M64 general purpose bombs were fused to detonate instantaneously or with a small time delay. The damage form both of these fuse setting was evaluated by the 12th air forces ordnance team. Their finding included, much more damage was sustained by the time delayed fuse than with an instantaneously fused bomb. Bomb penetration prior to detonation was more many time more effective.
