During the second atomic bombing mission on August 9, 1945, Bockscar was diverted from its; primary target, the city of Kokura Japan to Nagasaki Japan due to target visibility issues over Kokura. The bomb was dropped 2.1 miles north of the assigned aim point at Nagasaki. The bomb destroyed 1.8 square miles of Nagasaki and killed 40,000 people. Had the bomb detonated at it’s assigned aim point a case can be made the death toll would have at least doubled to 80,000, given its location to Nagasaki’s urban core.
