On Jan 14, 1945 the 8th US Army Air Forces sent 70 B-17 bombers to destroy the Cologne Bridge of Deutz. This bridge spans the Rhine river. The bombers sighted the bridge visually and released 72 M65 1,000 lbs general purpose bombs from an altitude of 25,200 feet. 98% of the bombs struck within 1,000 feet of the aim point with multiple bridge strikes. Bomb placement accuracy was considered excellent.
