Just prior to the Marine landings on Iwo Jima The 7th US Army Air Forces sent B-24 bombers over the island to attack gun and shore installations. This attack was different as the bombs were fitted with Proximity fuses. These fuses will detonate the bombs at around 30 feet above the ground showering any target with bomb fragments from above. Since this was one of the first missions with bombs equipped with these VT fuses, the army air forces evaluated the attacks performance. This video will review the attacks, bomb and fuse characteristics and the post attack evaluation.
