During WWII the US Navy’s warships secondary batteries consisted of 3 to 10 5 inch 38 caliber dual purpose guns. The fire control system of these guns was the Mk. 37 director. The director used either optical or radar sensors to determine the targets range, elevation and bearing. This information was transferred to the plotting room where the Mk. 1 computer and Mk. 6 stable element crunch a firing solution. The fairing solution is transferred to the ships gun crew. This video will review the guns fire control system concentrating on the function of the Mk. 6 director.
