The Church of the Brethren in response to the continuing tragedies of gun violence in this country has been collaborating with a coalition of 47 religious groups representing 80 million Americans, known as Faiths United to Prevent Gun Violence. This group contends that, "gun violence is taking an unacceptable toll on our society, in mass killings and in the constant day-to-day occurrences of senseless deaths by fire-arms all over the country."
The Church of the Brethren has a long history of advocating for peace. General Secretary of the Church of the Brethren, Stanley Noffsinger with the 46 other religious groups sent a letter to President Obama advocating immediate legislation to address gun violence. The action urged criminal background checks to help prevent dangerous people from getting firearms. It recommended that high-capacity weapons and ammunition magazines should not be available to civilians. The letter also states that gun trafficking should be made a federal crime.
This edition of "Brethren Voices" features five guests. Pastor Kerby Lauderdale of Portland Peace Church of the Brethren discusses the book of Job and man's inhumanity. Doug Eller, a life-long hunter shares his insight and respect for nature and the hunted. BVS volunteers, Amanda from Virginia with Rebekka and Jan of Germany present their thoughts. According to the volunteers from Germany, life appears much safer without all of the guns.
