Sense and Sensibility represents an artist in transition, finding her footing and her style, as we know Austen edited this novel from an epistolary to a more familiar third person narrator. Likewise the characters are in transition, from a higher to a lower class, from singleness to marriage, and from lesser to greater maturity. Perhaps above all, this novel represents a society in transition as it wrestles with how much we owe our neighbors, what is the value and worth of propriety, what is the value and worth of individualistic pursuits.
