Jane Austen's Juvenilia is often misunderstood and underestimated. This collection of work from her teenage years shows growth, certainly. At the beginning she is not the same writer as we have of her major novels. But from it's earliest stages they reveal her wit, her sophistication, and her keen understanding of the novel. By the time you get to Catherine, the longest and most complete piece included, the voice and style of Austen, that we all know and love, shines through.
