A Lovely Jaunt | The Handmaid's Tale Ep 2: Dystopias and Theocracies @ALovelyJaunt | Uploaded February 2018 | Updated October 2024, 19 hours ago.
VIDEO SUMMARY:

In this video I discuss dystopias and theocracies. First, let's take a look at the origins of the word dystopia and compare it with its counterpart utopias. We take a glance at the etymology and its first use as the title of Sir Thomas Moore's work. Then we dive deeper into the purpose of these types of works.

From there we take a look at Theocracies, both in history and in literature. We see how the government of Gilead falls into this category but also differs. Then we analyze the way in which theocracies are problematic.

Get ready for an analysis of power, sexuality, and boredom in episode three!
