Remote ID Update Higher Altitudes!

This video will cover a discussion of how Remote ID update can adapt for higher altitudes, specifically during certain sanctioned model contests. Remote ID is a large focus of the RC airplane and drone flying community, and this video is a remote id for drones update.

The Federal Aviation Agency (FAA) Remote ID (identification) ruling will have a large impact on radio control airplanes, both fixed wing and drones. The Remote ID rule requires manufacturers to install remote ID on drones as they are built, adds the need for a remote ID module for older aircraft and establishes FRIAs or FAA Recognized Identification Areas where modelers can fly without remote ID.

As the understanding of the remote ID ruling evolves, that will be over time changes the impact how and where we fly with remote ID. This video will cover the recent (March 8, 2023) update from the Academy of Model Aeronautics that allows for the possibility for higher altitudes for model flight at sanctioned events. Depending on the location, the maximum altitude for RC model flight may extend from the current 400 feet above ground level to either 700 or 1,200 feet AGL, depending on altitude of the controlled Class E airspace above the event.

This is a significant development and demonstrates that the AMA can raise issues regarding remote ID with the FAA and seek various exemptions to allow for RC airplane flight, in short remote ID update higher altitudes.

I also discuss where we are with FAA remote ID compliance to include the manufacturers currently approved for remote ID modules from the FAA, and the process of AMA coordinating as a Community Based Organization for Remote ID with the FAA.
