FAA FRIAs Approved!!
I am happy to report that we have notification on July 25, 2023 from the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) that the first FAA FRIA's (FAA Recognized Identification Area) are approved!
As part of the FAA's new remote ID ruling, all RC aircraft flying after Sept Sept 16, 2023 need remote ID electronics installed in the model aircraft or drone. The one exception is recreational RC airplanes flying in an FAA approved FRIA. As the FAA knows where these club flying sites are, as they have approved them, no remote ID equipment is required for recreational RC aircraft operating in a FRIA.
There are around 2,500 AMA flying fields in the US, so we can expect further FRIA approvals as the Sept 16, 2023 remote ID compliance date gets closer.
