Oscar Ruddick-Trentman won first prize with composition 'Brain Dance', in the Digital Media category for Guildhall Young Artists competition, 'RELEASE'.
Oscar, Age 18 says: "The main inspirations for this work were the production styles of Aphex Twin and Death Grips. The piece meanders through a constantly shifting soundscape, with no two sections being the same. Through varying rhythmic structures and constant tonal and textural shifts, the piece reinvents itself over time, constantly updating itself.
The piece transitions from cerebral, ambient IDM to harsh industrial hip-hop style production, and then fades back into ambience before fading out. The title takes it name from the genre "braindance", and the piece is supposed to mimic exactly that feeling."
In March 2021, all 1,600 students who access a Saturday music school across the Guildhall Young Artists network, including Junior Guildhall and the Centre for Young Musicians, were invited to submit a composition to four categories: Songwriting, Digital Media, Music to Picture and Concert Music. As well as cash prizes for the top 3 compositions in each category, participants could also win other prizes including an online masterclass with an industry leading artist.
