Emilie Curtin won joint first prize with composition 'Stella's Song', in the Music to Picture category for Guildhall Young Artists competition, 'RELEASE'.
Emilie, Age 14 says: "My submission in the ‘Music to Picture’ category is called ‘Stella’s song’. I wanted to tell a dreamy and melancholic story of a girl who missed being on a stage and performing. I wanted a bitter sweet feel to the story and music.
For this piece of music, I decided to explore logic for the first time (which was quite daunting), using the piano roll to write out the music and using minimal effects. It is also the first time I wrote music for a moving picture, and decided to use the frame changes as the basis for the tempo. I was inspired by minimalist music, as well Japanese anime music like Studio Ghibli, especially Joe Hisaishi’s compositions."
In March 2021, all 1,600 students who access a Saturday music school across the Guildhall Young Artists network, including Junior Guildhall and the Centres for Young Musicians, were invited to submit a composition to four categories: Songwriting, Digital Media, Music to Picture and Concert Music. As well as cash prizes for the top 3 compositions in each category, participants could also win other prizes including an online masterclass with an industry leading artist.
Emilie attends Saffron Centre for Young Musicians, which is part of Guildhall Young Artists.
