Jack won third prize with composition ‘SEBSTENSTIEN’, in the Music to Picture category for Guildhall Young Artists competition 'RELEASE'.
Jack, from Junior Guildhall says: "Even though I still get terrified watching them to this day, I have always been obsessed with horror and monster movies. Apart from all the jump scares, the thing I find my most captivating about them is the music and the way it can evokes abject fear. As a genre, horror encompasses a world of different sounds - from a haunting lullaby of children singing, contemporary strings manically performing, dramatic choral chants, to eerie experimental soundscapes. For this piece I went old school, mixing gothic romantic orchestral scores with “spooky” surf rock. I was heavily inspired by composers such as Bernard Hermann, Max Steiner, and Danny Elman. My favourite thing about writing this piece was using a theremin – I love the ethereal but dated presence the instrument can bring to the music."
