In spring 2020, as the UK went into its first lockdown, five groups of Guildhall School artists created a collaborative musical response to their experiences of this new way of living. Each artist created a 4-minute piece, which then formed a 20-minute long work called ‘Consequences’. Artist and illustrator Soofiya has created a series of drawings inspired by these sound works, titled 'Tapestry of Consequences'.

"Siphoned off the sea" was inspired by the artist’s move back to her family home during lockdown. On her return she found that her father had started to put on nightly concerts for their neighbours. Some of those nights felt so surreal that it inspired her to write this short ghost story called ‘Siphoned Off the Sea’.

The illustration that accompanies Maya’s work draws on her ideas of ghosts and earthly ties. Symbols of the pandemic, including keys, locks, masks, and flowers are woven into the drawing, representing a number of different lockdown motifs.
