My final victory over this game.
Raiden V is still my favorite vertical scrolling shmup. I got it working correctly on PC and so decided to practice until I could get all of the endings and story routes unlocked for the achievements. As of this posting, I'm still two achievements shy of getting the final achievement for unlocking all others - collect 100 fairies and destroy 100 Sol Towers. I'll add in a note when I get the final achievements.
This is not my best playthrough, and my score on the leaderboards at the end was from October 2017. I was playing here for survival so I could get to the True Last Boss and get the happy ending.
How do you reach the True Last Boss though? You have to make it to stage 8 with all three of your weapons powered up to level 10. Route doesn't matter, but you have to be above Route C in stage 6 or the game will end there. After you finish the stage 8 boss, you'll see the blocks fall from the sky, the excellent music will kick in, and you'll face off against Divine Rampart. You can use continues to get there.
I made woeful errors in Bonus Stage 2 and I thought I was seriously done for since I didn't get any Fairies or Bombs from it. I made up for it with the Homing Plasma Laser, my favorite, in stages 7 and 8.
An oddity was that the game starts out in 800x600 resolution, so I made it full screen, but the recording was still in that resolution, and I used my video editing program to zoom in to make it full screen.
As for one thing that I see people needlessly complain about - the story from the characters. How can you not love the voice acting? The character dynamics in this game are awesome. If it bothered people that much then they could just as easily turn down the voice volume. As for me, it's one of my favorite parts of the game. I also enjoy that the soundtrack is original, rather than rehashing all of the old Raiden tunes from the original arcade game.
My Steam name is doctornusakan, based off a character from 1998's SaGa Frontier, and associated with a super old email that I have from 1999.
I hope you enjoyed watching the playthrough - I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.
Update from April 30th, 2026 - I got the final three achievements for collecting 100 Fairies, destroying 100 Sol Towers, and the Legend achievement for earning all achievements on this date. Super happy about that.
