The first Texas team to play in a Super Bowl was the Dallas Cowboys for Super Bowl V in 1971. (The Cowboys lost to the Baltimore Colts 16–13.) But the state would not host the championship game until three years later for Super Bowl VIII. A crowd of nearly 72,000 people filled Houston's Rice Stadium to watch the Miami Dolphins defeat the Minnesota Vikings 24–7. As of 2026, Texas stadiums have held the Super Bowl three additional times: XXXVIII in 2004, XLV in 2011, and LI in 2017. This 1968 television documentary for Houston's KPRC-TV describes how local television crews produce national game telecasts, from calling play action to cuing replay footage.
