U.S. President Barack Obama arrives at the Vatican Thursday for his first meetings with Pope Francis.

Security is tight with one man arrested ahead of the visit as he protested against the detention of a man convicted of killing two FBI agents.

The White House says Obama wants to discuss economic mobility and opportunity.

The Pope's more open-minded attitude toward women and gay people also resonates with Obama, who counted on both groups to help propel him to the presidency.

Hopes run high for the visit.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) UNIDENTIFIED AMERICAN TOURIST SAYING:

"I think the meeting is very important because I think Pope Francis and President Obama have a very great interest in helping people and with all the problems that are in the world today I think they need to get together to perform some transformation of the way society is structured."

Obama, a Christian, has kept his religion a mostly private affair, rarely attending church in Washington, D.C., since his election in 2008.
