While they spent most of their time battling snow and conquering ice - it didn't deter these soldiers from sharing hundreds of photographs of themselves, better known as "selfies," during an arctic drill.

Sixteen thousand men and women from 16 different NATO countries participated in the Norwegian-led "Cold Response" drill, where the troops practiced fight and survival in an arctic environment.

Inspired by the success of a record-breaking photo seen taken here by Oscar host Ellen Degeneres, which became the most shared message on Twitter ever, all soldiers were encouraged to take selfies of themselves.. and their dogs.

And they are going great guns, as the collection is becoming a viral hit on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.
