With long-overdue rains heading for Southern California, communities already impacted by wildfires now face a new threat: mudslides and debris flows. Burned landscapes and hydrophobic soils—caused by fire-damaged soil chemistry—mean water will run off rapidly, carrying debris and endangering homes.
Noel Middleton, Team Rubicon’s Los Angeles Metro Administrator, shares how Team Rubicon volunteers are working alongside CAL FIRE, the Department of Public Works, and other agencies at a local sandbag fill site in Altadena, California. Together, they’re filling and distributing sandbags to help protect homes that survived the fires from further devastation.
As Noel says, “Our mission today is to get ahead of the oncoming rains and to prevent further damage, destruction, and suffering for those who’ve suffered more than enough from these terrible fires.”
