My first brand new Macintosh was a PowerMac G4 "FW800" 1.25GHz DP. And it ran circles around PCs of the era, at least when it comes to creativity apps and according to my own benchmarks at the time. And I do regret selling it to buy my PowerMac G5 (the worst contemporary Mac I've ever owned).
Note: I realize the idea of the G5 the worst Mac is going to ruffle some feathers. Please note that I disclaimed that as "the worst contemporary Mac I've ever owned". And if you had to take it in for service four times in six months, with each service attempt taking at least a week, and ultimately culminating in Apple having to outright replace the Mac under AppleCare, only for that Mac to crash a lot, you'd probably have the same opinion.
Back to the G4: Let's say that I got into making videos 20 years sooner, and kept my G4 instead of attempting to upgrade to a G5, what would my video creating experience be like? Obviously I might be ingesting video from a FireWire-equipped camcorder. But what about analog video? Well I just might have the Potential Regrets™ for that...
What video capture cards will we be looking at? Will they work with the FW800? Or will I have to pull out an older G4? Will the capture cards even work? You'll have to watch to find out!
