PLEASE READ to understand: (lyrics below) - by request for ChristineAngelDaae, who asked for this song with the 2004 movie & 25th anniversary stage show, also okaying hidden plot angle. :) For those who don't like HP, just think of it as Christine caught in the middle of a war between those at the Opera House & the Phantom and trying to get through to Erik, though she feels she can't reach him- until the end. The "shots" in the dark mean literal gunfire & fireballs (I also used a bit from promos to fit song) - but it also means what that term means - "taking a chance," as Christine does at the end, hoping to quench Erik's fury. I used fire to symbolize Erik and water to symbolize Christine (to go with lyrics also) - Fire is deadly, a violent force of nature that destroys- and water is usually calm & peaceful- but it is the ONLY thing that can successfully put out a fire and can be powerful when doing so. The clips at the end show that. With Christine's kisses, she tames the beast- and brings back her Erik. The quieter fiery ring surrounding them at the end symbolizes the slow-burning passion that then consumes them, a fire they both share. Those who don't like idea of HP, read no further...Hidden plot Symbolism: I included TEW as intro, since if fits song theme- the part of movie where Raoul, her advisor, tells Christine (Erik's chosen queen) that she's the only one who can stop the bloodshed and must, due to who she is, also to prove herself in her "ordeal by fire" (in history, this was an exclusive test of guilt or innocence for nobles and royals only) by joining him in the plot against the king (Erik). The intro to the vid gives her reply to his proclamation- she feels twisted every way, confused and hurt. Wanting to end the war, but not wanting to betray or hurt Erik. As song begins, it goes back in time after the gunshot, and Christine remembers past incidents, feeling out of her element in her important role as Erik's queen. She knows she is despised by others and left out, treated as a criminal, because Erik chose her - and often feels as if she's trudging underwater (lyrics/symbolism show that) when up against Erik's fiery wrath with others, even with herself, not always understanding why he does the things he does. Soon she realizes who is behind the darkness controlling him (Phantom spirit- hidden but shown to viewer "in the blink of an eye" when she closes hers). Desperate to stop the violence on both sides, and caught in the middle, Christine tries over and over to reach Erik, weary of the hatred toward him and from him toward others but determined not to give up, her good memories also her crystalline dreams of how she wishes it could always be between them pushing her on (also shown with the clips of the sharp,crystal frames, the blurry outside her current reality). In the end, she takes a shot in the dark (a chance) and fights a different kind of fight against his fiery anger- love against hate- successfully bringing the war to a close, while showing where her heart truly lies. The rest of symbolism I leave up to the viewer - I'm running out of room. lol
