Police in Melbourne, Australia, used a spike belt to catch an accused car thief in an overnight campaign to clamp down on car thefts.
Victoria Police swamped local roads scanning vehicles to detect stolen cars and motorbikes, and arresting individuals wanted on outstanding warrants.
Arrested as part of “Operation Sneak” were a man and a woman apprehended about two hours after allegedly stealing a white Toyota sedan from an address in Richmond, which came to a stop at Melbourne Airport. The encounter was caught on video from the air by the police Air Wing using night-vision technology.
Air Wing observed the vehicle allegedly travelling on the Tullamarine Freeway at speeds up to 170km/h, police said. Officers deployed Stop Sticks at the intersection of Bulla Road and Balmoral Avenue and the vehicle rolled to a stop at the airport.
The alleged driver, a 29-year-old male from no fixed address was charged with drug driving, theft of motor vehicle, reckless conduct endangering life, dangerous driving, unlicenced driving, fail to stop and fail to answer bail. The alleged passenger, a 24-year-old female from Broadmeadows was charged with theft of motor vehicle.
Stop Sticks are a tire deflation device used by police forces to impede drivers from escaping and end police chases.
