Police in Colombia unburied more than 1.5 tons of cocaine that was hidden underground. The huge stash of tightly wrapped, pressed bricks was found in a cove buried by soil outside of a house in a rural area in Nariño, in the west of the country, near Colombia’s border with Ecuador.
Police say it was buried by traffickers while waiting to send it abroad. Anti-Narcotics Directorate of the Colombian National Police said two men were arrested who were guarding the shipment that totalled 1,552 kilos.
Colombia is the largest exporter of coke, according to the United Nations. The national police force said it has seized more than 65 tons of coke so far in 2023 — that’s a lot. But other government agencies have seized a lot as well. The Colombian Navy said it has seized 56 tons this year. Clear there is a lot of it being manufactured. Last year was a record high for Colombian authorities, seizing 671 tons.
