Pokemon Champions is out now as a free to start competitive battle game on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, and this video covers my very first three Ranked Battles on launch day. I have always enjoyed Pokemon games but online player vs player battles are not something I do regularly, making Pokemon Champions a real step outside of my comfort zone since the entire game is built around online competitive battling against real players.
Using two different but closely related battle teams that I put together myself, this is an honest and unfiltered first look at what jumping into Pokemon Champions Ranked play feels like for a casual Pokemon fan who does not usually engage with the competitive side of the series. No competitive experience, no meta knowledge, just a Pokemon fan figuring it out in real time.
Pokemon Champions is a dedicated competitive battling game built around the same formats used in official Pokemon VGC tournaments, with no story campaign or overworld exploration.
