UK Prime Minister Theresa May defended the UK's decision to launch coordinated strikes with US and French forces, at the House of Commons on Monday.

“The intention of those strikes were carefully chosen, the intention was to degrade the chemical capability of the Syrian regime and to deter its willingness to use those chemical weapons”, May stated.

The Prime Minister was accused of having taken this decision because US President Donald Trump asked her to do so. “At no point at all. I took this decision, I took this decision because I believed it was the right thing to do and it was in our national interest", she answered.

Some opposition MPs questioned May's decision to join the attack without parliamentary approval. “This statement serves as a reminder that the Prime Minister is accountable to this parliament, not to the whims of the US president”, said leader of opposition Jeremy Corbyn.

“I believe that the action was legally questionable”, he added.

The US, UK and France launched air strikes against multiple government targets in Damascus early on Saturday morning, targeting alleged chemical weapons sites as well as a Syrian military base in Homs.
