US President Donald Trump signed an executive memorandum on Thursday imposing about $60 billion (€48.8 billion) in tariffs on Chinese imports.
Trump said the US had a trade deficit of $504 billion (€409.6 billion), calling it "the largest deficit of any country in the history of our world."
Trump said he spoke to Chinese President Xi Jinping about the actions and that he had "tremendous respect" for him.
The US President denounced "a tremendous intellectual property theft situation going on which likewise [amounts to] hundreds of billions of dollars."
Trump also touched down on re-negotiating NAFTA and starting a negotiation with the European Union “because they really shut out our country.”
