This morning found me, as it often does, with a pressing task at hand in the garden. We are soon off to the cabin for a few days, and while our good farm hands see to the general care of the property, the planting of my own garden beds falls squarely to me. There was no time for lingering, merely a swift, determined effort to get these vital plants into the earth.

My first endeavor was with the potatoes, laying them deep in their hay beds, a method I've come to trust completely. This "Ruth Stout" way, with its generous mulch, always yields the cleanest of tubers, a true delight for the larder. It's a simple approach, one that has often been met with skepticism, yet it proves its worth season after season.
Following the potatoes, I turned my attention to the tomatoes. This year, I've decided to plant a more modest number, trusting in our existing pantry stores. For the first time, I am planting them directly into my raised beds, still using the same deep mulch style. There's no need to ask others to water, no fretting over the young plants.
