It's move-out day for the baby chicks, and we're excited to watch them grow up and move into their outdoor chicken coop. After spending time in our pantry, they've finally reached a size where they’re ready for the great outdoors, although we’re still keeping an eye on those chilly nights. The coop, made by Todd for my birthday years ago, has turned out to be the perfect space for raising young chicks and other birds. We're hoping it keeps them safe and cozy while they adjust to their new home.
We’ve been trying to maintain a natural balance in our yard, letting dandelions thrive for the bees and accepting that weeds like creeping Charlie will always be a challenge. As always, the garden needs a lot of work, but there’s something peaceful about the constant battle with weeds and the satisfaction that comes from making small progress each day. This year, we’re trying a new approach with flame weeding, and we hope it helps keep things manageable. We’ve also been getting ready for another season of gardening, from planting onions to mulching with grass hay.
In between all the work, we managed to catch a bee swarm—something we never tire of witnessing. It’s always a little chaotic but rewarding, and I’m looking forward to seeing how our beekeeping skills progress this year. While the farm work piles up, I’ve been reflecting on how much I’ve learned through the years. We may not do everything the “proper” way, but it’s about what works for us and what the land is willing to give.
