I’m spending the day in the kitchen getting some things done around the house and I thought I’d bring you along with me. I started by putting up some orange peels in vinegar for cleaning and then moved right into making our goat milk soap for the year. I talk through my process, share some safety reminders, and show you what worked and what didn’t. The weather is bitter cold here, so it felt like the right kind of day to stay inside, make things with my hands, and just move at a slower pace. This wasn’t meant to be a how to video, just a look at what a normal homemaking day really looks like around here.

Orange Peel Vinegar Cleaner / Rinse Aid
Orange peels
White vinegar
Cover peels with vinegar
Sit in sunny window 2 to 3 weeks
Strain and dilute half vinegar half water
Used for cleaning or dishwasher rinse aid
Goat Milk Soap Batch
Goat milk (frozen)
Lye
Olive oil
Coconut oil
Shea butter
Optional additives: oatmeal, lavender, coffee grounds, rose petals
Essential oils used: balsam fir
Oils and lye mixture brought within 10°F of each other
Soap poured and left to cure longer than standard batches
Lotion Bars
Equal parts shea butter
Equal parts beeswax
Equal parts fractionated coconut oil
Vitamin E oil
Rose hip oil
Essential oils: lavender, frankincense, cinnamon, cedarwood
Melt, mix, pour into molds, let set
