Review – I was expecting this game to be good as these styles of games usually are, but I didn’t expect it to be this awesome. It really is a beautiful game.
Although I will contradict my statement with the obvious pixelation and jagged edges right from the get-go in the Switch version. I noticed it instantly and it bugged me throughout the game, especially since the art style and environments are so beautiful. I wished I played this on a 4K console or PC to really get the most of the graphics. Particularly when there are screens where you just run, with no puzzles, with the sole purpose of giving you an opportunity to admire the wonderful landscape in the background.
Similarly, the music and sounds effects also stand out. The sounds of the robots are creepy and there is a musical theme where they respond to certain notes. The way they respond to them is also haunting. The voice acting is done in a made-up language but you work out what Lana is saying as she does it a lot to call your little companion. I love the way she whispers when there are robots around. The music is breathtaking throughout and there is even a point in the game where a full-on song plays as you traverse a desert for a long time. What could have been a boring slog of just holding right for ages to get to the next part, is a stand out moment in the game as you watch the beautiful scenery and listen to a beautiful song.
There aren’t many mechanics to get to grips with. You get to control a cute little animal that follows you and tell it to do stuff to help you work out puzzles. The puzzles are the main point in the game. Lots of switches and hiding past enemies. The aren’t really taxing for me, but that might be because I have played a lot of these types of games and I am used to them. I got stuck once for about 10 minutes but only because the solution was off screen and I had to travel back to see it. There are definitely a couple that will get a lot of people stuck but I managed to do them all really quickly. So, I’m not sure whether that’s testament to the game’s difficulty, or my ability to quickly solve puzzles. I think it’s the latter as I did the whole game in 4 hours.
The controls are a bit unnecessarily complicated. There are 2 separate buttons to use as ‘activate’ and 2 separate buttons for confirming where your companion should be, depending on the context. But at least the game is kind and shows you which button to press, all the time.
The AI of animal companion is also very good. It never got stuck when I called it, unless it was supposed to for the puzzle. There was one time where it shot off the screen and dies, but I think that was a bug and the game didn’t reset the puzzle because of the death. But generally, it’s a top NPC and never does anything annoying and always behaves as it should.
The story of the game is told without text or voiceovers. It is wonderfully told through visuals alone and it can even get emotional at times. You really feel for the characters.
I actually bought this game as a limited-edition game without knowing anything about it, but I’m glad I did. For a 4-hour game, I will always remember this.
