Review (part 2/3 - continued from previous video description) –
And talking of boss fights. OMG they are hard. At first I always think, this isn’t too bad, that’s usually because it’s only the 1st form. You then have to do a much harder 2nd form which have different attack patterns and usually kill you straight away, which takes ages to learn them because you have to defeat the 1st form each time just to get a window to practice. The Vulture boss was particularly hard. I thought I was doing really well and had mastered it. But then in it’s second form, it introduced a new enemy that I had to learn the attack patterns on parry timings. The boss just did the same attacks plus and extra one, and you have to watch and learn the attacks of this new enemy. Keeping tabs on both enemy attacks is too overwhelming. I concentrated on getting this new ‘needle’ enemy out of way first so I could concentrate on the boss, and then it spawned 2 new ones. Remember at this point, I can die at any time and now I had the boss and 2 new Needle enemies to dodge and kill with my rubbish stamina bar. I looked at a guide later and found out that you don’t need to attack the boss at all in the 2nd form. You just need to kill the needle enemies to deplete the boss’s health. Something I just wouldn’t have noticed with the intensity of the fight. This knowledge probably saved me another half hour on top of over half an hour I was already on to beat it. This is just terrible design. As if made to frustrate rather than challenge.
It was a similar experience for the next rock boss. It was ok for the first half of the fight, when I mastered the moves, but then the second half brings in 2 of the same boss. Just a nightmare to dodge with luck being a factor to how they both decide to attack at the same time. Again, endurance can lead to an insta death as you attack one and don’t have enough stamina left to dodge a surprise attack from the other.
Levelling up is almost a fool’s errand and barely helps. You can chose which stat to power up and I simply concentrated on levelling up my Health and Stamina, but seemingly still never enough. You can level up different types of strength which is annoying because you need a certain level of particular types of strength to be able to equip most of the weapons. It just seems like such a wate of XP to put in one or 2 types of strength, only to hold a weapon which you have no idea how good it is. They aren’t automatically better the further you get into the game. I kept one of the first weapons I found because the power was ahead of everything and I thought I would just upgrade that instead. Upgrading current weapons seemed like a better strategy than getting new ones. You hardly get enough items to be able to do so anyway. Health and stamina are way more important to upgrade it seems.
You can also add boons like bonus damage or health up. But the currency to upgrade is extremely limited and I spent the majority of it on adding time to my parry window so I would get hit less.
Some of the items you get are pretty useless too. Its because you die so often so you don’t want to waste an ‘weapon damage +25%’ or ‘defence +25%’. Or even thinking about using it mid-combat can lead you to getting hit because you lose concentration.
