Review – This is the second time I’ve started this game. I actually quit the first time because I was stuck as I didn’t have an item that I needed to make a platform appear and I had no idea. It was also brutally tough. But then a few years later, I thought I’d give it another go because the difficulty was likely due to me using a TV that had a 0.3 second latency. I was right. This isn’t as brutally hard as I once thought. Don’t get me wrong, it still is very hard, and will shock people, but I found it much more pleasant. Not that it’s meant to be pleasant. The graphics are gory throughout and pixel art is a great aesthetic. The music is also good with some tunes staying in my head long into the night.
The major difficulty is right at the start though. You hardly get any useful items for a long time. The game gradually gets much easier as you get more items and increase your health but it takes a while. Any major items you get a trade-off. Like holding an item for more attack, will also lower your defence. I found myself not using any when they are a major part of collecting.
There are other smaller items called rosary beads, which can be more useful. But at first they are rubbish, like slightly more defence, or slight poison resistance. You don’t get the good stuff until later. You are also limited to how many you can equip and I spent most of the game with only 2 slots because I hadn’t found the room where you can upgrade your slots.
The most annoying thing about the items is that the names are so obscure, that I could never remember what they did, but then the description takes a few seconds to read because they don’t just say something simple like “health +5”. It gives a description of the lore of the item for a couple of sentences before telling you what it does. It takes much longer than necessary to scroll through the items to find what you want. It’s all down to the Souls style of lore telling. Which has to give a story to everything and use weird words that you never quite know what they really mean because they are only used in games like this. . “Because it is my Guilt, I claim you, Grievous Miracle.” ??? - And what’s a Prei Dieu or Piliary flask? The story in general made no sense to me and all character dialogue was equally as incomprehensible. They could have just cut out all text.
When you die, you leave your ghost in the spot where you died. I kept going back to collect it thinking I was losing my XP like in Dark Souls but that wasn’t the case so I wanted a lot of my time. The game doesn’t do a good job of explaining the mechanics. I had to use a guide a lot. Especially for quests as there are many times where you have to go to specific areas where a quest character will appear to progress. If you don’t go back to that part at the right time, you can lose your quest. So, the game either expects you to be lucky, or just trawl through the entire map multiple times to randomly find your next dialogue for the quest. There are also no markers on the map showing if there are any items missing. I don’t appreciate that as Metroidvania games have started to all be a bit fairer when it comes to giving hints so the player can 100% the game without a guide.
There are a lot of free DLC upgrades too which was great, but made my game absolutely necessary to ask a guide because there are missable things in the game if you want to get the best ending. But I really needed to use AI to ask many questions about how the mechanics work and what I am supposed to do after I meat a particular person. I probably would have missed some vital steps if I just looked at a guide because I don’t go through it word for word. Just when I need some info.
The bosses are really cool but the difficulty is all over the place. I really struggled on the 3rd or 4th boss (big face that shoots homing missiles at you) because it was relentless and I couldn’t power myself up anymore because I was limited in exploration abilities. But then later, the bosses get easier. Until the second to last boss which is insanely hard and took me over an hour and a half to do (it had another phase due to the ending I was going for). But after that, the last boss was relatively easy and I did it on my first attempt. Then it gives a secret 2nd form for the best ending, but this was easy too because it gives you a checkpoint. I’m glad it did, it’s just that this kind of game doesn’t give you checkpoints in bosses normally.
Anyway, with all the flaws, the game is still brilliant. I was dangerously hooked on it and each session lasted hours into the night. It took me over 20 hours to complete with all the extra story mode DLC and I definitely don’t regret it.
