I was surprised to see another Double Dragon game so soon after the last release of DD Gaiden. I’m sure that makes 2 double dragon games in 2025. Although these are different graphical styles, and made by different developers. Arc are notorious for doing great reboots of old games. However, my first impressions of this were not good. It looks like an Xbox 360 game, and the Double Dragon games on that console are not good.
Upon playing though, I was pleasantly surprised. There are lots of moves. Every button on the controller is used, which is different for a scrolling beat em up. And there are generous helping of weapons scattered around to keep combat interesting.
The controls sometimes don’t work though. The timing for stomping enemies on the ground is very exact, rather than being intuitive. Half of the time I tried to stomp on an enemy, I would whiff a grab and leave myself open. The platform sections are also really bad due to the slidey controls. This feels really dated and can lead to unnecessary deaths. Just like an Xbox 360 game.
The cutscenes are really dated too. Using static art with voice over and the same music throughout. Even the music sounds dated, by making them “cool” versions of the NES game music by using guitars. Such a tired concept.
I did enjoy the combat though, so that is the main thing. There are 8 levels and the whole playthrough lasted about 2.5 hours. It’s a bit long for my liking of a scrolling beat em up but the good gameplay didn’t make it a chore.
Overall, this game is OK, but completely unnecessary.
