Review – This is actually the first Ninja Gaiden 3D game I have played. I heard that these games were hard but since I have completed the Dark Souls games and Elden Ring, I thought that I would be ok. I was wrong. I struggled on section in the first chapter too many times. I must have died 5 times and thought that if this is how the game is going to be, I don’t have the time to get through the whole game like this. So, I changed the difficulty to Hero (easy) mode.
I got through the section without any trouble and the game just got easier and easier. And then I realised I could speedrun the game and skip loads of fights ss I didn’t need to earn the currency and explore for items.
This stopped me reverting back to Normal mode, as I knew I could definitely do it on that difficulty but I just wanted to speedrun through this game. First reason was because my Gamepass subscription was running out soon and I wouldn’t have had enough time to beat it. The second reason was that I’m just not that into slashers. The whole game is just slashing, with the occasional break in surfing or grinding. I’ve played enough games like this to know I just want to get through it.
The problem with the difficulty so early on is that you are given far too many moves and mechanics too early. You are given tutorials every few minutes and I didn’t feel it was enough time to register the mechanics in my brain. This led to a sudden overwhelming section where I was battered by waves of enemies as I was still getting to grips with the controls. It doesn’t help that you can be attacked by multiple enemies at the same time and they don’t wait until you have dealt with one enemy.
I found I had to fight with the camera too as it auto locked onto an enemy as another one would attack from behind without me seeing it.
The lack of energy refills was annoying too and I found it better to just intentionally die after a checkpoint so that my energy could refill, rather than chancing whether I could survive the next section. I definitely didn’t like doing this, but I didn’t want to go into a battle without full health, just to die after a 10-minute fight.
There are loads of moves but as with any of these games, you find yourself gravitating to the ones you like, mainly the ones that do the most damage in the shortest amount of time.
The environments are big and look nice but they are not memorable. If I see a screenshot of the game, I would have no idea how far into the game it was from.
The combat is very flashy and top notch, but it seems that this is it. I know it is meant to be just a slasher, but it just isn’t enough for me. I have the same problem with other slashers of this kind like Devil May Cry and Bayonetta. I can see that they are very well-made games, but they get repetitive quickly and I just find myself grinding through them.
This game is just like that. Nothing more, nothing less.
