Review - I have completed all the Resident Evil games and the new direction has really impressed me since Resident evil 7 and the remakes of the old games, where they have reinvigorated the series and managed to keep things fresh. This keeps the same quality but Capcom have run out of ideas to keep the series fresh. So, they split this game into 2 styles. When you control the Grace, it’s more like playing resident evil 7. A first-person mode with weak attack power that is very intense. And then in some levels, you play as Leon and it plays just like Resident Evil 4 where it is action orientated and you can mow through the zombies. Both styles are very competent and do split the game nicely. Although Leons takes priority near the end of the game, which I would have preferred the split to continue.
You play as Grace mainly at the start of the game and this is the most terrifying part in my opinion. You have hardly any items and you really don’t want to waste anything. Your management is imperative. The enemies are truly intimidating and you can waste all of your items on just one enemy if you get it wrong. It truly feels like survival horror. I liked the mansion at the start of the game in particular. The only thing is, since you are forced to be so good at item management at the start of the game, I was playing that way throughout and I ended up with an enormous amount of firepower and I barely used, or even needed to use the main gun, the Requiem. I had loads of bullets left by the end. And this was on the hardest difficulty (you can choose from the start).
It’s pretty could that when you finish the mansion with Grace, Leon comes in on the next level, and you get the chance to destroy all of the zombies you left alive easily. Leon is much more competent and it’s cool to get the chance to feel like a boss after being so weak for so long.
Just a quick mention of Grace, since she’s the other main protagonist. While I enjoy playing her levels, probably the most, as a character, she’s pretty annoying. So, it’s lucky that the game plays in 1st person so you only get to see her in the cutscenes. But she ruined every cut scene for me once I noticed that she stutters with fear every time she talks. I thought that it would be just at the start because she is nervous and obviously terrified, but she doesn’t grow as a character through the whole game and continuously stutters through sentences like she is a scared little girl. Did I mention she is also a trained FBI agent?
The game is designed very well with both styles excelling in their own fields of expertise. It’s hard to say which style I prefer the most so that has worked out well. But I was left feeling disappointed by the over familiarity. I guess we’ve been spoiled with so much refreshing resident evil content lately, especially since the last one I played was Resi 4 remake in VR.
I really like this game, and there are some amazing moments. But due to the incredible recent run of Resi games, this doesn’t seem like it stands up to the last few.
