Pioneer SX-1050 Restoration. My friend Joe gererously gave this to me which was a teaching opportunity with my son. This was his garage receiver - second owner - purchased in the 1980s and had stopped working at some point recently.
I’m a hobbyist & repair enthusiast and sometimes have an unorthodox approach, but the end result is usually great!
Here’s a video containing a number of snippets while I worked on this receiver. I don’t go into too much detail and probably could have recorded more and done a better job, but the idea here was just to talk about the journey.
Upon receipt, the unit was dead. Two of the four right outputs were shorted. Caused the soft start resistor thermal fuse to blow, along with the main 10 amp ceramic fuse.
Performed a recap of the entire unit. Kept a few of the larger caps as they were in spec and good. Found that 2 capacitors were completely open and many had a high ESR. Many had drifted to higher values.
Muktiple 2SC1312 transistors replaced in the audio path with modern equivalents to reduce noise.
Protection circuit had a bad 2SC1384 transistor which was kicking in and out.
Volume potentiometer had separated and fallen apart requiring an aftermarket replacement to keep costs low.
Needed a number of new lamps and a complete cleanout and polishing.
The best part was that the receiver was not messed with and while it was actually quite complicated to work on (for me and my son), I got to know it very well and learned a lot during the process. this is one where I didn’t make any mistakes or caused further damage, that’s been known to happen sometimes.
This will be my son’s receiver, it is sonically excellent and is really putting out great wattage.
I just need to either put new veneer on or stain the wood case.
I’m very grateful to have met such nice friends and in this situation was gifted such a great receiver from Joe to restore.
