PFC Joe Mann parachuted into the Netherlands during Operation Market Garden on September 17, 1944. His unit was tasked with securing the bridge over the Wilhelmina Canal near Best. During fierce fighting against entrenched German forces, Mann repeatedly exposed himself to enemy fire while attacking hostile positions and destroying enemy emplacements. Although wounded in combat, he refused evacuation and continued fighting alongside his fellow paratroopers.
On September 19, during a determined enemy counterattack, a German grenade landed in Mann’s fighting position. Without hesitation, he threw himself onto the grenade, absorbing the blast with his body and saving the lives of the soldiers around him. PFC Joe Mann sacrificed his life in an extraordinary act of courage and selflessness. For his heroic actions and supreme devotion to duty, he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.
