Persona 5 Royal's protagonist is canonically named Akira Kurusu or Ren Amamiya depending on which medium you consume (manga or anime). The player is able to change his name to their own at the beginning, which I did because it's cool to be referred to by your own name.
We learn the circumstances that led to Akira's unfortunate criminal record, probation period and transfer to Yongen-Jaya under the care of Sojiro Sakura. Sojiro is the owner of Café Leblanc, where Akira will be staying for the next year under supervisory order.
Players are also reintroduced to Igor, the proprietor of the Velvet Room. Igor has appeared in every Persona game to date. This time, his two cohorts are Caroline & Justine, ageless twins who serve as wardens of the Velvet Room. Their role is to watch over Akira and guide him through his rehabilitation, albeit with heavy doses of sarcasm and authoritarianism.
