Right off the bat we are introduced to the Japanese culture. The school year actually begins in April. The students also go to school six days a week instead of five days a week like here in America. Sunday is the students' only day off.

You may have notices the shoe lockers in the school at Gekkoukan High. This area is actually a larger version of genkan. Genkan are an entry way and a place where one leaves their shoes before entering. Genkan are often recessed to hold any and all of the dirt that is tracked in. In essence, genkan are like a mudroom of sorts. Some genkan may be tiled or made of concrete. These types of genkan are called tataki. The lockers for the shoes in the school are called getabako. From what I understand, genkan are for preventing dirt from outside the house into the home. This idea I can relate to as I detest having dirt all around the house. Just as a side note, slippers are often worn around the house in place of shoes.
