The Gourmet Race is more of a mini game of sorts. Kirby races King Dedede for honor, glory and, most of all, food. Kirby always was a bottomless pit of lovable gluttony.
It could be that the Gourmet Race takes place possibly around the time Spring Breeze. I mostly come to this conclusion because, in Spring Breeze, King Dedede steals all the food in Dream Land.
