Operation Stalemate II — Peleliu
Under the direction of the command ship USS Mount McKinley, the battleships USS Pennsylvania, USS Maryland, USS Mississippi, USS Tennessee, and USS Idaho, supported by the heavy cruisers USS Indianapolis, USS Louisville, USS Minneapolis, and USS Portland, along with the light cruisers USS Cleveland, USS Denver, and USS Honolulu, unleashed a massive three-day bombardment of Peleliu. The shelling paused only to allow air strikes from three fleet carriers, five light carriers, and eleven escort carriers accompanying the invasion force.
During the preparatory bombardment, Allied naval and air forces fired 519 rounds of 16-inch shells, 1,845 rounds of 14-inch shells, and dropped 1,793 500-pound bombs on the island.
At 0832 hours on September 15, 1944, the first LVTs carrying Marines of the 1st Marine Division began landing on the invasion beaches of Peleliu during Battle of Peleliu.
