This tank is one of the most visited and photographed sites on the island. It belonged to the U.S. Army’s 710th Tank Battalion, which supported both Marine and Army units during the Battle of Peleliu.
On October 18th, 1944, the tank was moving forward to support the 7th Marines, who were under heavy machine-gun fire near Hill 210. Riding on top of the tank was Marine Captain Henry Jones, guiding the crew toward the fighting and identifying Japanese cave positions.
As the tank advanced, it ran over an aerial bomb that had been converted into a land mine. The explosion killed four members of the tank crew along with Captain Henry Jones. Another crew member was severely wounded and later died from his injuries. The tank commander was blown clear of the vehicle and survived.
Remarkably, the tank remained upright after the blast. It was later stripped for parts, and eventually flipped onto its side to remove the tracks. In 1997, a memorial was placed here to honor the men who lost their lives.
Archival film footage and photographs show this same tank supporting troops on Angaur and at other locations on Peleliu.
